<p>The 145th ARS is one of two of the group's fying units, both of which operate the KC-135E. The unit was formed in March 1956 as the 145th Air Transport Squadron at Akron-Canton Airport, with C-46Ds. The unit was redesignated an Aeromedical Transport Squadron in February 1957, with the MC-119J. The 145th moved to Clinton County AFB and became an ARS in July 1961, although the first KC-97F did not arrive until February 1962. The 160th ARG was organized in July 1961. Aircraft were replaced by the KC-97L in March 1965 and the KC-135A 10 years later. The unit moved to Lockbourne AFB (subsequently renamed Rickenbacker AFB/ANGB) in September 1971. The unit commenced conversion to KC-135Rs late in 1991 with transfer from the 160th ARG to the 121st ARW.

<p>The 166th ARS is the wing's second flying unit operating the KC-135R. The unit was established as the 166th Fighter Squadron at Lockbourne AFB in January 1947 with F-51Ds and later F-51Hs. The squadron re-equipped with F-84Cs in April 1950 and was mobilized between February 1951 and October 1952. It reverted to the F-51H but converted to the F-80C in March 1954. The unit became a Tactical Fighter Squadron with the F-84E assigned in January 1955 and the F-84F in late 1957. The squadron was called to active duty in October 1961 with deployment to Etain AB, France as part of the 7121st TFW. The 166th was demobilized in August 1962 and returned to state control, although the unit's aircraft remained in Europe. The squadron converted to the F-100C and joined the 121st TFG in October 1962. It was activated again between January 1968 and July 1969 with assignement to Kunsan AB, South Korea. The unit upgraded to the F-100D in November 1971 and the A-7D in December 1974, with the 121st TFG having upgraded to Wing standard two months earlier. The unit was redesignated the 166th ARS with KC-135Rs in 1993.
